Mobile Literacy in South Africa : ウィキペディア英語版
Mobile Literacy in South Africa
Mobile Literacy in South Africa is an ecosystem of projects and initiatives by a variety of stakeholders that promote, support and enable access to literature and literacy projects on mobile devices, especially mobile phones, in the context of informal education. Mobile literacy is also known by the abbreviation mLiteracy.
This ecosystem in South Africa was mapped at the mLiteracy Network Meeting hosted by the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg in January 2015. The starting point for meeting was the UNESCO study Reading in the Mobile Era 〔(Reading in the Mobile Era (2014) )〕 (2014), which takes a closer look at the implications of reading on mobile devices in developing countries. Although only 7% of households in Africa have Internet connection,〔(Reading in the mobile Era, p. 16 )〕 more than 65% have access to a mobile phone.〔http://www.gallup.com/poll/168797/africa-continues-going-mobile.aspx〕 The content of the UNESCO report shows that there remains potential for enhancing literacy by providing content using mobile devices.

== Ecosystem of mLiteracy in South Africa ==
The mLiteracy ecosystem in South Africa developed organically through the work of several stakeholders using mobile platforms to encourage literacy. These include content providers, platforms, mobile networks, funding agencies, training facilities (including schools and libraries), authors and users. Several organisations working within or based in South Africa have links to and synergies with projects across Africa. Most of the projects use open licences, specifically Creative Commons licences.
Historically, the target group of most projects have been children, teenagers and young adults. Recent data from the South African Department for Basic Education showed that 53% of all Grade 3 children and 70% of all Grade 6 children scored less than 35% on the Annual National Assessment language test.〔http://www.education.gov.za/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=%2B6A7GNX%2Fk6o%3D&tabid=358&mid=1325/ Report of the Annual National Assessments (2011) (Retrieved 8.2.2015)〕 With high mobile penetration in South Africa (some claims as high as 128%)〔http://themediaonline.co.za/2013/09/the-mass-market-engages-with-mobile/〕 there is potential to engage with learners and young adults at every stage of their development via mobile devices.
